Shaping the Rough follows Xuan-Xuan, a young boy in a traditional carving workshop in Chiayi, as he learns to make deity statues alongside his older cousins. While he believes they are skilled and complete, he gradually discovers their uncertainties and struggles. Through carving, he finds a way to grow closer to them. As unfinished statues take form, so do their relationships—revealing that none of them are complete, but all are still in the process of becoming.
